The Basics

What Is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is an approach that uses principles of learning and behaviour to support practical, meaningful skills. ABA therapy may focus on functional communication, everyday routines, play, social participation, and independence. Goals should reflect the child’s strengths, preferences, support needs, and family priorities rather than follow a one-size-fits-all program.

How ABA support is delivered matters, too. A thoughtful plan starts by understanding what the child can already do, where support would be helpful, and what progress would look like in everyday life. Families should be involved in choosing goals and reviewing progress. Learn more about our ABA assessments and how they inform individualized support.

Ontario families may have questions about where therapy takes place, how to involve caregivers, and which funding options apply. This page compares our six service pathways so you can explore the right starting point. Availability depends on your location, the service requested, and current scheduling; contact us for an up-to-date discussion.

Right Fit?

Is ABA Therapy Right for Your Child?

Families typically reach out to us when:

Your child has an autism diagnosis and you would like to explore support for communication, daily routines, or independence.

Your child could benefit from support with participation, communication, or routines at daycare or school.

You are comparing in-home, virtual, or community-based options and want to understand what each involves.

You want collaborative goals, clear progress updates, and a plan that reflects your child’s needs.

Behind the Scenes

How We Deliver Every Service

ABA therapy sessions — everyday practice

In-person ABA sessions can use play, structured teaching, and everyday activities to practise agreed-upon skills. The setting and frequency should fit the child’s needs and the family’s schedule. Ask us about staffing, session format, and continuity in your area before getting started.

Clinical planning and progress review

ABA support should include assessment-informed goals, clear documentation, family input, and regular review of what is working. During a consultation, ask about the qualifications and Ontario registration status of the professional responsible for clinical oversight, the review schedule, and how updates are shared with families.

Honesty

We encourage families to discuss a child’s preferences, comfort, and goals before selecting services.

Funding Support

Explore our Ontario Autism Program guide and confirm funding eligibility with AccessOAP.

Funding Your Child's Program

Depending on eligibility and the services required, families may use Ontario Autism Program (OAP) core clinical services funding, private insurance benefits, or self-payment. OAP registration does not automatically mean funding is available immediately, and insurance coverage varies by plan. Review the official Ontario OAP funding guidelines and contact AccessOAP or your insurer to verify your situation.

Good Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The best fit depends on your child's goals, preferred setting, and current supports. A consultation can help you compare in-home ABA therapy, daycare support, parent coaching, and virtual options. An ABA assessment may be recommended where appropriate.

Sometimes. A family may benefit from more than one service, such as in-home ABA and parent coaching. Whether services can be combined depends on the child’s goals, service availability, and the clinical plan.

Program planning, service delivery, and clinical oversight should be explained before therapy begins. Ask about each provider’s role and qualifications, applicable Ontario professional registration, and how your child’s goals and progress will be reviewed.

We can discuss in-person availability in select Ontario communities and whether a virtual format may be suitable in your location. Please contact us to confirm current coverage and scheduling.

Some families are eligible for OAP core clinical services funding; others use private benefits or self-payment. Eligibility, available funding, and coverage differ. See our OAP funding overview and verify details with AccessOAP or your insurer.

You can contact us to discuss your child’s support needs, even if you are still exploring an autism assessment. ABA skills assessments are different from diagnostic assessments. To register for the Ontario Autism Program, a child must be under 18, live in Ontario, and have a written autism diagnosis from a qualified professional.
