ABA Assessments in Ontario, Canada

We provide ABA therapy in Ontario, Canada, and every program starts the same way — with a real assessment, conducted directly by our BCBA. Before we write a single goal, we need to understand your child's actual strengths, challenges, and what's driving the behaviours you're seeing.

The Basics

What Is an ABA Assessment?

An ABA assessment is a structured evaluation of your child's current skills, behaviours, and needs, used to build a genuinely individualized autism therapy plan. It typically includes a Functional Behaviour Assessment — identifying what's driving specific behaviours — and a skills intake covering communication, social interaction, play, and daily living abilities. The result isn't a diagnosis; it's a clear, practical starting point that every goal in your child's plan gets built from.

Right Fit?

Is an Assessment What You Need Right Now?

Assessments are useful at several points:

You're just starting ABA therapy and need a baseline before a plan can be written.

Your child's current therapy doesn't seem to be working and you want a fresh, independent look.

You're trying to understand a specific challenging behaviour and what's actually driving it.

Your child is due for a scheduled re-assessment to check whether the current plan still fits.

You're not sure ABA is the right fit yet and want an expert opinion before committing.

Behind the Scenes

How We Deliver It

BCBA-conducted, in-home or virtual

Assessments are conducted by our BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst), either in your home or virtually depending on what's being evaluated and what fits your schedule. A home assessment lets us observe your child in their natural environment; virtual delivery works well for follow-ups or when an in-person visit isn't practical. The same clinician who assesses your child designs their program, so nothing gets lost in translation.

What an assessment actually involves

Expect direct observation, structured activities, and a conversation about your child's history and current challenges. We cover your initial concerns, evaluate communication, social interaction, behaviour, and daily living skills, analyze the patterns driving specific behaviours, and prepare written recommendations with a proposed therapy plan.

Information-gathering, not a test

Nothing about the assessment should feel like a test your child can fail. The goal is to understand strengths and needs clearly, then turn those observations into a useful written report and specific, measurable therapy goals.

The Right Starting Point

Why a Real Assessment Matters

No Generic Templates

Your child's plan comes from what we actually observe, not a standard checklist.

Clarity on Behaviours

Understanding what's driving a behaviour is the first step toward changing it.

A Baseline to Measure Against

See real progress over time instead of simply having to take our word for it.

Direct Clinician Involvement

The person assessing your child is the same clinician shaping their program.

Funding Your Assessment

Assessments are typically covered under the same funding sources as ongoing autism therapy in Ontario, including the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) and private extended health benefits. See our Ontario Autism Program guide, or ask during your free consultation. Assessments are the required first step before ABA therapy at home or an early intervention program begins, and follow-up assessments help update goals for children receiving virtual ABA therapy.

Good Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

No. An ABA assessment evaluates skills and behaviour to build a therapy plan — it doesn't diagnose autism spectrum disorder, which requires a separate diagnostic evaluation.

It varies by child and what's being evaluated, but we'll give you a clear time estimate during your free consultation before anything is scheduled.

Our BCBA conducts assessments directly, either in your home or virtually, so the same clinician evaluating your child also designs their program.

On a regular schedule set during your initial plan — typically tied to key milestones or a set review period, so the plan keeps pace with your child's progress.

You'll receive a written summary of findings along with a proposed therapy plan, and we'll walk through both together so you understand exactly what's recommended and why.
